Sex therapy can be helpful for disorders that present themselves in sexual behavior and/or sexual experience. Sexual difficulties show up in men and in women and often manifest as:
- sexual listlessness: the desire for sex became less and less or is no longer present at all
- sexual aversion: the thought of sex is experienced as unpleasant and repulsive
- Orgasmic disturbances
- Erectile dysfunction
- premature ejaculation (ejaculatio praecox): occurs even before insertion into the vagina or shortly thereafter
- Vaginismus: due to a spasmodic constriction of the vaginal muscles, the insertion of the penis is not possible or only possible with pain
- Pain during sexual intercourse (dyspareunia)
- Postcoital disorders: Difficulties after sexual intercourse
- sexual inhibitions/blockages (‘sexual shyness’): there are inhibitions/blockages towards one’s own or the other body, sexual activities cannot be enjoyed due to insecurities
Further difficulties in the sexual sphere:
- Transsexuality/Transgender
- Sex addiction
- Difficulties in finding a partner or long-term partnerlessness
